Joan Murray lives and works in East Anglia, England, where she
has a studio at her home in Lowestoft, the most easterly town in
Britain. Joan explores her chosen themes through a wide variety
of materials. Her artistic practice includes drawing and
ceramics. Using the images of cartography, her recent map
drawings make reference to the way we record and inhabit our
built environment.
Joan has recently had drawings from her Map series selected for
the Kettle’s Yard Open 2006, Cambridge, and the Mapping
exhibition at Bury Art Gallery, Museum + Archives, Bury,
Lancashire.
Her ceramic work has been exhibited in London and widely in East
Anglia. She exhibits annually at Aldeburgh with the Suffolk Craft
Society. Joan’s clay stamp has been in use since 1986 and can be
found illustrated in British Studio Potters’ Marks, compiled by
Eric Yates-Owen And Robert Fournier, A & C Black. 1998. Her
ceramic work and working methods are described and illustrated in
The Art of Hand Built Ceramics by Susan Bruce, The Crow Press,
2000.
Joan continues to divide her time between her own work and
part-time lecturing at Lowestoft College. She has been
responsible for organising community workshops, summer schools
and public exhibitions. Within InPrint she is presently
collaborating with Rupert Mallin and Tonia Jillings on a Coastal
project.
