Joan Murray lives and works in East Anglia, England. Her home
town of Lowestoft is the most easterly place in Britain. Joan
explores her chosen themes through a wide variety of materials.
Her artistic practice has included drawing, ceramics, sculpture
and more recently textiles.
Joan had drawings from her Map series selected for the Kettle’s
Yard Open in 2006. Work from the same series was selected for the
Mapping exhibition at Bury Art Gallery, Museum + Archives, Bury,
Lancashire. Work from her latest drawing project was shown in the
recent Elements: Material World exhibition, The Forum Norwich
(2011).
Her ceramic work has been exhibited in London and widely in East
Anglia. Joan’s clay stamp was used between 1986 & 2000, and
is recorded in British Studio Potters’ Marks, compiled by Eric
Yates-Owen and Robert Fournier, A & C Black. 1998. Her
ceramic work and working methods are described and illustrated in
The Art of Hand Built Ceramics by Susan Bruce, The Crow Press,
2000.
Joan has now replaced clay with textiles. Her new wall hangings
are directly related to the Suffolk coast, and the designs are
based on views from her beach hut.
